Where is the "HONOUR" in HONOUR KILLING????????????? by Jaya Arora on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 3:00pm All of us know about honor killing. It refers to the murder of the boy and the girl who go for love-marriage even after being from different castes/ religions. The most astonishing part is that the ‘killing’ is done by their parents, relatives or society. Honor killing is done in the name of the parents’ or caste’s respect in society. They think that their respect gets diminished if their daughter gets married to a boy who is of a lower caste than their caste or they are not up to that standard, that status in the society or many other reasons and same for the boy. This is why they kill for maintaining their so-called “respect” in the society. Honour killing is a sin. Even our epics say that killing in any form is a sin. Honour killing was a sin in previous Janmas. The example is: in Ramayana, Ravan’s sister Surpnakha had done ‘Gandharva Vivah’ with army chief ‘Viduth Julvey’ in a place called ‘Kalikey’. Because Surpanakha was the sister of King Ravana of a very big place and her husband was only the army chief of a small place and not a king of a big place, so, according to him, they could not marry. So, to maintain his respect, he killed her husband. Surpanakha got very angry and she was determined to take revengefrom her brother. When she heard that two powerful men ‘Ram’ & ‘Laxman’ had come in a forest nearby and they had killed her maternal uncle ‘Marich’ and brothers ‘Khar’ and ‘Dushan’, she thought that if Ravan became an enemy of Ram, then Ravan could be killed. In this way, she could get her revenge. She worked according to her plan and in the end, as we all know, Ravan got killed and his whole ‘Lanka’ got destroyed.
